The Funds at Five
The Funds at Five is an in-depth retrospective of the first 5 years of Massachusetts Community Health and Healthy Aging Funds investments. It includes data showing where and how funds were invested across the state; stories and insights from awardees leading policy, systems, and environmental change; and insights into the real change that can be achieved through community-centered, trust-based grantmaking. It also digs into the challenges of supporting long-term change and provides lessons to other grant-makers to strengthen future work.
Results from the Policy, Systems, and Environmental Change Approaches Report & Inventory
Funds awardees in Cohorts 1 and 2 (grants made in 2020 and 2022) completed the Policy, Systems, and Environmental Change Approaches Report & Inventory (PSE-ARI) in the spring of 2025. The PSE-ARI includes shared qualitative and quantitative measures of PSE change across awardee initiatives, with a focus on methods used to shift policies, change relationships and power dynamics, and transform how people understand social determinants of health and lived experience. It also documents awardees’ progress and big wins while promoting discussions about the strengths and gaps of PSE change initiatives to inform future planning and the field.
Learnings from the Grantee Reflection and Connection Sessions
Grantee Reflection and Connection Sessions, conducted from June to August 2024, engaged over 100 participants in conversations about PSE change initiatives and strategies in their communities and the field(s) they work in. Findings highlight that grantees are working collaboratively to address root causes of health and racial inequities, redesign systems to center community voice and lived experience, and drive meaningful, sustainable change. The findings also underscore opportunities for funders to better support these activities long-term by adopting more strategic, flexible, and realistic philanthropic approaches that prioritize processes and impact.
